Reading: Mount Etna Disrupts Air Travel in Sicily
Renewed volcanic activity at Mount Etna has disrupted air travel in Sicily. As a result, Catania Airport (CTA) has had to suspend all arrivals and departures, and several airlines have had to divert or cancel flights.
On September 26, the airport operator, SAC, said that all flight operations at Catania Fontanarossa would be suspended until 12:00 local time on September 27 because of volcanic ash and dangerous wind conditions. Airspace sectors C1 and B3 were also closed as part of the restrictions.
At first, the airport continued to operate with reduced capacity while the ash cloud was approaching. However, the restrictions were later tightened, which led to a complete suspension of both arrivals and departures.
Flights diverted to other Italian airports
The disruption to flights had already begun before the full suspension, as airlines started diverting flights away from Catania Airport. According to Italian media reports, at least 10 flights were diverted: five to Palermo (PMO), three to Trapani (TPS) and two to Comiso (CIY).
Aeroitalia moved its Rome–Catania services to Comiso while Catania Airport remained unavailable. A Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Catania was also diverted to Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
These diversions allowed some services to keep operating, although passengers who were affected had to change their travel plans and, in some cases, needed extra ground transportation.
Other carriers decided to cancel their services instead of diverting them.
KM Malta Airlines confirmed that it had canceled flight KM642 from Malta to Catania and KM643 from Catania to Malta on September 26 because of the volcanic activity and the restrictions that resulted at Catania Airport.
Brussels Airlines also canceled its Catania–Brussels service, which had been scheduled for September 26. The airline said that around 140 passengers had been affected and that they were not expected to return until September 27 or 28. Brussels Airlines also diverted another flight to Palermo, and passengers then continued their journey to Catania by bus.
A TUI fly Belgium service was diverted to Palermo in a similar way.
Etna sends ash plume about 4 kilometers high
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that an ash plume had reached approximately 4 kilometers above sea level and that the cloud was moving south. Because of the ongoing ash emission, a red VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) was issued.
Volcanic ash is a serious hazard for aircraft because it can damage engines and other aircraft systems. Therefore, the restrictions at Catania Airport were caused by the presence and movement of the ash cloud, as well as by the airspace limitations that it created.
Whether flight operations will reopen depends on the volcanic ash situation, the wind direction, and the related airspace restrictions. Airlines may also need extra time to reposition aircraft and crews and to restore the schedules that were disrupted by the suspension.
Unit 7. Disruption That Has Happened: Present Perfect for Current Results
Words from the text: affect, begin, reach, remain, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A Use the Present Perfect (have/has + past participle) to talk about something that happened in the past but is important now. We do not say exactly when it happened — the result now is the important thing.
The volcano has disrupted air travel in Sicily. (= flights are still a problem now)
Catania Airport has had to suspend all arrivals and departures.
The ash cloud has reached 4 kilometers above sea level.
Volcanic ash has affected several flights this morning.
В русском языке нет отдельной формы для 'прошлое действие с результатом сейчас' — используется просто прошедшее время. В английском для этого нужен Present Perfect, а не Past Simple.
B Questions: Have/Has + subject + past participle...? Negatives: subject + haven't/hasn't + past participle. We often use already in positive sentences and yet in questions and negatives.
| Positive | The airport has already closed two runways. |
| Question | Have the airlines canceled their flights yet? |
| Negative | SAC hasn't restored normal capacity yet. |
Has the operator tightened the restrictions?
Has the airport reopened yet? — No, it hasn't reopened yet.
The airline hasn't repositioned its aircraft yet.
Passengers have already left the terminal.
C Compare Present Perfect with Past Simple (Unit 1). Use Past Simple for a finished action at a stated past time (yesterday, on September 26). Use Present Perfect when no time is given and the situation is still true now.
| Past Simple signals | yesterday, on September 26, at 10:00, in 2010 |
| Present Perfect signals | already, yet, since, just, so far, this week |
SAC said that flights were suspended on September 26. (Past Simple — a stated time)
The airspace has remained closed since then. (Present Perfect — still true now)
The disruption has already begun.
Airlines have had to reposition aircraft because of the volcanic hazard.
Ground staff have worked hard to restore the flight schedule.
Не используйте Present Perfect со словами, указывающими точное время в прошлом (yesterday, on September 26, at 10:00) — в этих случаях нужен Past Simple.
Exercises
7.1 Complete the sentences with the correct Present Perfect form of the verb in brackets. Use Past Simple for the finished event in item 8.
Example: Volcanic ash ______ (affect) flight schedules this week. → Volcanic ash has affected flight schedules this week.
- The volcano ________________ (disrupt) air travel across Sicily.
- Catania Airport ________________ (suspend) all arrivals and departures.
- The ash cloud ________________ (reach) 4 kilometers above sea level.
- Several airlines ________________ (cancel) their flights today.
- The airport operator ________________ (not restore) normal operations yet.
- ________________ (SAC / issue) a new warning about the ash cloud?
- Passengers ________________ (remain) at the airport since this morning.
- The disruption ________________ (begin) before the full suspension.
7.2 Rewrite the sentences, changing Past Simple to Present Perfect to show that the situation is still true now. Remove the past time word.
Example: The airport closed two runways yesterday. → The airport has closed two runways.
- The volcano disrupted air travel yesterday.
- The ash cloud reached the coast this morning.
- SAC suspended all flights at 10:00.
- The airline canceled three flights yesterday.
- The restrictions affected many passengers last week.
- Capacity at the airport remained reduced all day.
7.3 Write sentences about the current situation at Catania Airport. Use Present Perfect and the words given.
Example: airport / suspend / all departures → The airport has suspended all departures.
- ash cloud / reach / 4 kilometers
- airlines / divert / several flights / to Palermo
- operator / tighten / the restrictions
- capacity / remain / reduced
- disruption / affect / many passengers
- KM Malta Airlines / cancel / two flights
Unit 8. Flights Would Be Suspended: Passive in Different Tenses
Words from the text: tighten, issue, expect, operate, reduced capacity, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A We use would be + past participle to talk about a future action as it was planned or expected at an earlier moment in the past. This form is common after reporting verbs like said or announced, when we explain what was going to happen next.
SAC, the airport operator, said that flight operations would be suspended**** until 12:00 local time.
The airline announced that passengers would not be expected**** back until September 28.
Officials said that airlines would need extra time to reposition aircraft and crews.
После said/announced по-русски часто хочется сказать 'will be', но после глагола в прошедшем времени нужно 'would be + причастие'.
B We use has/have been + past participle (the passive of the Present Perfect from Unit 7) to show that a past action still has a result or importance now. We often use it in news reports to describe current effects of a decision.
More than 140 passengers have been affected**** by the suspension.
A red VONA notice has been issued**** because of the ongoing ash emission.
The airport operator says that capacity has been reduced**** since the eruption began.
The airport has continued to operate with reduced capacity all morning.
C We use had been + past participle (the passive of the Past Perfect) to show that something happened, and was completed, before another past action or before a past moment in the story.
Brussels Airlines canceled the flight, which had been scheduled**** for September 26.
KM Malta Airlines confirmed that flight KM642 had been canceled** because of the hazard**.
By the time the full ban started, several flights had already been diverted**** to other airports.
'Had been + V3' обычно появляется в предложении, где есть ещё одно действие в прошедшем времени (как had been scheduled... was canceled) — одно событие раньше другого.
Exercises
8.1 Look at these sentences based on the news report. Write the tense and voice of the verb in bold (например: Past Simple Passive).
Example: SAC said that all flights would be suspended until 12:00. → Future-in-the-past Passive
- An ash plume had reached approximately 4 kilometers above sea level.
- Around 140 passengers had been affected by the cancellation.
- A red VONA notice was issued because of the ash emission.
- The airport has operated with reduced capacity since this morning.
- Flight KM642 had been canceled because of volcanic activity.
- Restrictions were tightened later that day.
- Passengers were not expected to return until September 28.
8.2 Rewrite the active sentences in the passive, keeping the same tense.
Example: SAC said that officials would reposition the aircraft. → SAC said that the aircraft would be repositioned.
- The airline said that officials would tighten the restrictions.
- INGV reported that the ash cloud had affected several airspace sectors.
- Controllers have issued a new warning this morning.
- The operator said that they would suspend all flights.
- Airlines have canceled more than ten flights.
- The airport had already reduced capacity before the full suspension.
8.3 Complete the news summary with the correct passive form of the verb in brackets (Past Simple, future-in-past, Present Perfect, or Past Perfect).
Example: SAC said that flight operations ______ (suspend) until 12:00 local time. → would be suspended
- The operator said that capacity ________________ (reduce) because of the ash cloud.
- At first, the airport continued to operate with reduced capacity, but later the restrictions ________________ (tighten).
- Controllers confirmed that a new notice ________________ (issue) that morning.
- By midday, more than twenty flights ________________ (affect) by the restrictions.
- Several departures ________________ (cancel) already by the time the airport reopened.
- The airline said that passengers ________________ (expect) to continue their journey by bus.
Unit 9. Because Of, As a Result, Although: Linking Causes and Effects
Words from the text: as a result, although, therefore, as well as, result, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A We already know the conjunction because + subject + verb (Unit 4). Before a noun or noun phrase (no verb), we use the preposition because of. To link two separate sentences and show a result, we can start a new sentence with as a result or therefore (+ comma).
Flights were suspended because of volcanic ash and dangerous winds.
Mount Etna became active again. As a result, Catania Airport had to suspend all scheduled flights.
Volcanic ash can damage engines. Therefore, the airport operator closed the airspace quickly.
The eruption created a serious hazard for aircraft. As a result, several flights were diverted.
Because + подлежащее + глагол, но because of + существительное (без глагола): because the ash was dangerous → because of the danger. Не путайте! As a result и therefore начинают новое предложение, после них ставится запятая.
B We use although + subject + verb to show a contrast: something happens even though another thing (usually a problem) is also true. Although and but have a similar meaning, but we do not use them together in one sentence.
Although passengers were affected by the disruption, some flights continued through diversions.
Although the airport operated with reduced capacity at first, it later had to suspend all operations.
Some carriers cancelled their flights, although others chose to divert instead.
Не пишите although ... but ... в одном предложении: правильно — Although passengers were affected, some flights continued. Неправильно — Although passengers were affected, but some flights continued.
C We use as well as + noun or -ing form to add extra information (= in addition to). The verb result is also useful: result from (= be caused by) and result in (= cause).
The disruption was caused by the ash cloud, as well as by strong winds.
Reduced capacity resulted from the dangerous wind conditions near the airport.
The suspension resulted in long delays as well as extra costs for airlines.
Airlines may need extra time to reposition aircraft as well as to restore the normal schedule.
Exercises
9.1 Join the two sentences using the word in brackets. Make any necessary changes.
Example: Mount Etna erupted. Catania Airport suspended flights. (as a result) → Mount Etna erupted. As a result, Catania Airport suspended flights.
- Volcanic ash reached 4 kilometres. A red VONA was issued. (therefore)
- Ten flights were diverted. Passengers had to find other transport. (as a result)
- Reduced capacity caused delays. The airport did not fully close at first. (although)
- Strong winds caused problems. Volcanic ash caused problems. (as well as)
- Many flights were cancelled. Some flights continued through diversions. (although)
- The ash cloud can damage engines. Pilots must avoid flying through it. (therefore)
9.2 Rewrite the sentences, changing because + clause to because of + noun.
Example: Flights were suspended because the ash cloud was dangerous. → Flights were suspended because of the dangerous ash cloud.
- Catania Airport closed because volcanic ash was present.
- The airline cancelled the flight because wind conditions were dangerous.
- Passengers needed extra transport because the flight was diverted.
- The schedule was disrupted because the volcano erupted.
- Operations stopped because the hazard to aircraft engines increased.
- The airspace sectors were closed because the ash plume was moving south.
9.3 Complete the sentences with a word or phrase from the box.
because of | as a result | although | therefore | as well as | resulted
Example: Flights were suspended ______ volcanic ash and dangerous winds. → because of
- The ash plume reached 4 km. ________________, a red VONA was issued.
- ________________ some flights were diverted, some passengers still had to wait a long time.
- Reduced capacity ________________ from the approaching ash cloud.
- The restrictions were caused by the ash cloud ________________ strong winds.
- KM Malta Airlines cancelled two flights ________________ the volcanic activity.
- ________________, the restrictions were tightened and the airport suspended all operations.
- ________________ some carriers diverted their flights, others decided to cancel them.
9.4 Write three sentences about the consequences of the Etna eruption, using as a result, although and as well as (one each).
Example: (because of) → Catania Airport closed because of volcanic ash and strong winds.
- (as a result)
- (although)
- (as well as)
Unit 10. Airlines May Need Extra Time: Possible Future Necessity
Words from the text: need extra time, restore, depend on, reopen, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A In Unit 2 you learned must for strict rules and obligations. Now compare it with may need (to), which shows that something is possibly necessary in the future, not certain and not a fixed rule.
Catania Airport must suspend all flights when dangerous ash is present. (a strict rule)
Airlines may need extra time to reposition aircraft after a long suspension.
must = это обязательно (правило, приказ). may need = это, вероятно, понадобится (прогноз, не приказ). Не путайте их: must нельзя смягчить словом 'possibly'.
B Form: subject + may need + noun, or subject + may need to + verb. May does not change for person, and there is no 'does/do'.
| Correct | Incorrect |
| Airlines may need extra time. | Airlines mays need extra time. |
| The airport may need to reopen slowly. | The airport may need reopen slowly. |
The operator may need extra time to restore the schedule.
Ground crews may need to check the aircraft before departure.
The operator may needs more staff. (incorrect — no -s after may need)
Русские учащиеся часто добавляют -s после may need или забывают to перед вторым глаголом (may need to restore, а не may need restore).
C We often use may need together with whether or depend on to show that the future is uncertain and connected to other conditions.
Whether the airport reopens depends on the wind direction.
Airlines may need extra time, depending on how long the hazard continues.
После depend on ставится существительное или вопрос с whether, а не инфинитив: 'depends on the wind direction', не 'depends to'.
Exercises
10.1 Choose must or may need to complete each sentence.
Example: Airlines ______ (must / may need) extra time to reposition aircraft after a long suspension. → may need
- The airport operator ________________ (must / may need) suspend all flights when ash is detected.
- Ground crews ________________ (must / may need) extra time to restore the schedule after disruption.
- Passengers ________________ (must / may need) extra time to reach their connecting flights.
- Pilots ________________ (must / may need) follow instructions from air traffic control.
- The airport ________________ (must / may need) extra time before it can reopen safely.
- Airlines ________________ (must / may need) report any hazard to the operator immediately.
10.2 Rewrite these strict requirements as probable future necessity, using may need to.
Example: Catania Airport must close until conditions improve. → Catania Airport may need to close until conditions improve.
- The airline must cancel more flights because of the ash cloud.
- SAC must extend the suspension beyond 12:00.
- Crews must reposition aircraft that were diverted to Palermo.
- The operator must reduce capacity while the ash cloud remains close.
- Passengers must change their travel plans because of the disruption.
- Airlines must restore their normal schedule after the suspension ends.
10.3 Write a forecast about Catania Airport reopening normally. Use may need (to), and other words from the prompts.
Example: airlines / reposition aircraft → Airlines may need to reposition aircraft.
- SAC / need extra time / restore the schedule
- ground staff / extra time / handle diverted passengers
- airlines / reposition crews before flights resume
- the operator / extra time / check the airspace restrictions
- passengers / extra time / reach Catania by bus from Palermo
- whether flights resume / depend on / the wind direction
Unit 11. Restrictions, Which Led to a Suspension: Relative Clauses
Words from the text: lead to, ash plume, emission, presence, limitation, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A Use which to add extra information about the whole previous part of the sentence (a whole situation), not just one word. This is a common way to explain a result. Always put a comma before which.
The airport operator tightened capacity restrictions, which led to a complete suspension of all flights.
The volcano increased its ash emission, which created a serious hazard for aircraft.
Wind direction changed suddenly, which forced several airlines to reposition their aircraft.
После запятой which относится ко всей предыдущей части предложения, а не к одному слову — по-русски здесь обычно используется 'что', а не 'который'.
B Which can also refer to one noun (a thing) that was just mentioned. It adds extra details about that thing — like 'который' in Russian.
The ash plume, which reached about 4 kilometers, was reported by INGV.
The new limitations, which affected flight schedules, were announced by SAC.
В этом случае which = 'который' и относится к конкретному существительному, а не ко всей ситуации (сравните с разделом A).
C To join two separate sentences into one, replace the subject of the second sentence (this/that) with which and add a comma before it. This is a common pattern in aviation reports for describing causes and results.
Restrictions were tightened. + This disrupted the whole airport schedule. → Restrictions were tightened, which disrupted the whole airport schedule.
The ash plume's presence continued for two days. + This caused reduced capacity at the airport. → The ash plume's presence continued for two days, which caused reduced capacity at the airport.
Exercises
11.1 Join the two sentences into one, using which.
Example: The volcano's ash emission increased overnight. This created a serious hazard for pilots. → The volcano's ash emission increased overnight, which created a serious hazard for pilots.
- The airport operator suspended operations. This disrupted hundreds of passengers' travel plans.
- Airlines canceled several flights. This led to extra costs for many passengers.
- The ash plume moved south. This reduced the airport's capacity for several hours.
- New limitations were introduced. This forced airlines to change their schedules.
- Brussels Airlines diverted a flight to Palermo. This meant passengers had to continue their journey by bus.
- Wind conditions worsened quickly. This led to a complete suspension of arrivals and departures.
11.2 Read the short report below. Find the four clauses with which and decide what each one refers to: a noun, or the whole previous part of the sentence.
Mount Etna's ash emission increased overnight, which led to new airspace limitations. The airport operator, which manages Catania Fontanarossa, suspended all operations at 06:00. The ash plume, which reached about 4 kilometers, was reported by INGV. Restrictions were tightened later, which caused a complete suspension of flights.
Example: Mount Etna's ash emission increased overnight, which led to new airspace limitations. → whole previous situation (the increase in ash emission)
- The airport operator, which manages Catania Fontanarossa, suspended all operations at 06:00.
- The ash plume, which reached about 4 kilometers, was reported by INGV.
- Restrictions were tightened later, which caused a complete suspension of flights.
11.3 Complete the sentences with which and the correct form of a verb from the box: lead to, force, reduce, affect, disrupt, cause.
Example: The ash emission increased, ______ (create) a bigger hazard for pilots. → which created
- The volcano's activity increased, ________________ (lead to) new flight limitations.
- SAC tightened the rules, ________________ (force) airlines to reposition aircraft.
- The storm reduced visibility, ________________ (reduce) airport capacity.
- The ash plume's presence continued for two days, ________________ (affect) passenger schedules.
- Several flights were canceled, ________________ (disrupt) travel plans for many passengers.
- The airport operator suspended operations, ________________ (cause) long delays for everyone.
11.4 Complete the sentences with your own ending, using which. Write a realistic result.
Example: The airport suspended all flights, which ______. → which caused long delays for passengers.
- Volcanic ash emissions increased sharply, which ________________.
- The operator reduced capacity at the airport, which ________________.
- Airlines diverted several flights to Palermo, which ________________.
- New limitations were introduced, which ________________.
- The ash plume's presence continued for two days, which ________________.
Unit 12. SAC Said That Flights Would Be Suspended: Reported Speech with Tense Shift
Words from the text: report, according to, said that, whether, confirm, disrupt, suspend, operator, capacity, hazard, schedule, reposition
A In Unit 5 you used said before a direct quote. Now we join the reported sentence to said with that, and the verb usually moves one step back into the past. This is called tense shift (backshift): present becomes past, and 'will' becomes 'would'.
Direct: "All flights are suspended." → SAC said that all flights were suspended.
Direct: "We have canceled flight KM642." → KM Malta Airlines confirmed that it had canceled flight KM642.
Direct: "The ash plume will reach 4 km." → INGV reported that the ash plume would reach 4 kilometers.
В русском языке время в косвенной речи не меняется ('Он сказал, что рейсы отменены'), поэтому после said that легко забыть сдвинуть время в английском предложении.
B The table shows the most common tense shifts after said that. The same shift happens after other reporting verbs, such as reported and confirmed.
| Direct speech | Reported speech |
| is / are | was / were |
| is/are + -ing | was/were + -ing |
| has/have + past participle | had + past participle |
| Past Simple | had + past participle |
| will | would |
| can / may | could / might |
| must | had to |
Direct: "The operator is operating with reduced capacity." → SAC said that the operator was operating with reduced capacity.
Direct: "Ash is a hazard for aircraft engines." → Officials said that ash was a hazard for aircraft engines.
Direct: "We must reposition the aircraft." → Airlines said that they had to reposition the aircraft.
C To report a yes/no question, use whether (or if) + subject + verb — not question word order. You can also introduce reported information with according to + a source, instead of a reporting verb.
Direct: "Will the airport reopen tomorrow?" → Passengers asked whether the airport would reopen tomorrow.
According to the airline, flights would remain canceled until Monday.
The operator said that it was not clear whether the schedule could be restored.
Exercises
12.1 Translate the direct speech into reported speech with that and the correct tense shift.
Example: SAC: "All flight operations will be suspended until 12:00." → SAC said that all flight operations would be suspended until 12:00.
- KM Malta Airlines: "We have canceled flight KM642."
- INGV: "The ash plume is moving south."
- Aeroitalia: "We are operating our Rome–Catania service to Comiso."
- The operator: "We cannot restore the schedule yet."
- Delta Air Lines: "Our flight has diverted to Rome Fiumicino."
- Airlines: "We may need extra time to reposition aircraft."
12.2 Each sentence has a mistake in tense agreement. Find it and correct it.
Example: SAC said that flights is suspended until 12:00. → SAC said that flights were suspended until 12:00.
- The operator said that the airport remain closed.
- KM Malta Airlines confirmed that it cancel the flight yesterday.
- INGV reported that the ash plume reach 4 kilometers.
- Brussels Airlines said that passengers will return on Monday.
- Airlines said that they can need extra time to reposition aircraft.
- SAC said that airspace sectors C1 and B3 closes.
12.3 Report these airline and agency messages from the third person, using said that, reported, confirmed, whether or according to.
Example: TUI fly Belgium: "We diverted our flight to Palermo." → TUI fly Belgium said that it had diverted its flight to Palermo.
- Passengers asked: "Will the airport reopen tomorrow?"
- Catania Airport operator: "We are operating with reduced capacity."
- INGV: "The ash plume has reached 4 kilometers."
- Airlines: "We may need extra time to restore the schedule."
- SAC: "Airspace sectors C1 and B3 are closed."
- Italian media reports: "At least 10 flights were diverted." (rewrite with According to)
Unit 13. Review: vocabulary and speaking
A These are the seven key words of the lesson. Learn them first — you will need them to talk about any situation where a volcano, storm or technical problem affects flights.
| disrupt | Renewed volcanic activity has disrupted air travel in Sicily. |
| suspend | Catania Airport had to suspend all arrivals and departures. |
| operator | The airport operator, SAC, said flights would stop until noon. |
| capacity | The airport worked with reduced capacity at first. |
| hazard | Volcanic ash is a serious hazard for aircraft. |
| schedule | Airlines need extra time to restore the disrupted schedule. |
| reposition | Airlines may need to reposition aircraft and crews. |
Heavy snow can disrupt flights for several days.
The airport had to suspend all arrivals because of the ash cloud.
The airport operator issued a notice about the closure.
Runway capacity was much lower during the storm.
Volcanic ash is a serious hazard for jet engines.
Airlines are trying to restore the normal flight schedule.
Crews may need extra time to reposition aircraft after the disruption.
Disrupt означает «нарушить нормальную работу» (расписание сбито, но что-то ещё может работать). Suspend означает «полностью, но временно остановить» что-то конкретное (рейсы, разрешение).
B These verbs describe actions and events — what the airport, the airline or the ash cloud did. Many are used in the past simple when retelling news, and in the passive (be + past participle) when the subject is not important.
| affect | The ash cloud affected flights across southern Italy. |
| begin | Disruption began before the full suspension. |
| reach | The plume reached 4 kilometers above sea level. |
| remain | The airport remained closed until noon. |
| tighten | Officials tightened the restrictions overnight. |
| issue | INGV issued a red notice for aviation. |
| expect | Passengers are expected to return on Sunday. |
| operate | The airport operated with reduced capacity at first. |
The disruption began before the airport fully closed.
The ash plume reached about 4 kilometers above sea level.
The airport remained closed until the next morning.
INGV issued a red notice for aviation.
Passengers are expected to return on September 28.
«Expect» часто используется в пассиве: passengers are expected to... (а не passengers expect to...), когда речь о прогнозе, сделанном кем-то другим.
C These words explain cause and effect — why something happened and what will happen next. Note the prepositions: result from (= be caused by), lead to (= cause), depend on.
| reduced capacity | The airport worked with reduced capacity while the cloud approached. |
| result (from) | The delays resulted from dangerous wind conditions. |
| lead to | Tighter restrictions led to a full suspension. |
| restore | Airlines are working to restore the normal schedule. |
| depend on | Reopening depends on the wind direction. |
| need extra time | Crews may need extra time to reposition aircraft. |
| reopen | The airport hopes to reopen by Saturday. |
| confirm | The airline confirmed that two flights were canceled. |
The delays resulted from dangerous wind conditions.
Tighter rules led to a complete suspension of flights.
Reopening depends on the wind direction and the ash situation.
Airlines may need extra time to restore their schedules.
«Result from» = причина → следствие (delay resulted from wind). «Lead to» = действие → результат (restrictions led to suspension). Не путайте направление.
D These linking words connect ideas when you explain a situation, and these reporting words help you say what an official source said. Although + clause shows contrast; as a result / therefore show a consequence; according to and said that introduce a source.
| as a result | Ash covered the runway; as a result, flights stopped. |
| although | Although the airport reopened, delays continued. |
| therefore | The plume moved south; therefore, sectors closed. |
| as well as | Delays were caused by wind as well as by ash. |
| according to | According to INGV, the plume reached 4 km. |
| said that | The airline said that 140 passengers were affected. |
| whether | It is unclear whether the airport will reopen. |
| report | Media reported that ten flights were diverted. |
Ash covered the runway; as a result, flights were suspended.
Although the airport reopened, delays continued for two days.
The plume was moving south; therefore, nearby sectors were closed.
Delays were caused by wind as well as by ash.
According to INGV, the plume reached 4 kilometers.
The airline said that 140 passengers had been affected.
It is still unclear whether the airport will reopen today.
Italian media reported that ten flights had been diverted.
После whether нельзя ставить if в этом значении («будет ли»). Reports about the ash situation often mention the ash plume, the emission of ash, the presence of ash in the air, and the limitations it causes for flights.
Exercises
13.1 Write a short definition for each word. Compare your definitions with the model answers.
Example: disrupt → to stop something working normally for a time
- hazard
- operator
- capacity
- reposition
- emission
- limitation
