Northeast storm · Level A

Reading: Nor’easter Disrupts Northeast Air Travel
A strong storm is hitting the northeast of the U.S. It has strong winds and heavy rain. Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) has many flight cancelations. Airlines are changing their plans because of the storm.
On September 26, 2026, Boston had many problems. In a report just after 11 a.m., FlightAware showed 253 cancelations and 36 delays at Logan airport.
The storm is still here on Sunday, September 27. Delta Air Lines says it will cancel many flights at Boston Logan on Sunday. The weather is the reason. Delta is helping passengers change their flights.
Cape Air and Delta Have the Most Problems
Cape Air and Delta Air Lines have the most cancelations at Logan. On Saturday, Cape Air canceled 115 flights. Delta Air Lines canceled 95 flights. This information comes from FlightAware and The Boston Globe.
Cape Air also canceled all flights in its North Region. The storm is the reason. Passengers with flights from September 25 to 28 can change to a new flight. They can fly until October 2. They do not pay extra money for this.
Small Airports Have Problems Too
The storm is not only in Boston. On September 26, Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK) had 66 cancelations. Martha’s Vineyard Airport (MVY) had 44 cancelations. These two airports are important for Cape Air.
The storm is also hitting other airports. Airports in New York and Philadelphia have problems too. The number of cancelations is changing because airlines are updating their schedules.
Airlines Give Travel Waivers
Many airlines are helping passengers because of the storm. This help is called a travel waiver. Delta’s waiver is for eligible flights to, from, or through Boston from September 26 to 29. Eligible passengers can change their flights without a change fee. They must check the waiver's rules.
JetBlue also has a Northeast weather waiver. It is for flights from September 25 to 27. This waiver is for Boston and other airports. These airports are JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), Newark (EWR), Nantucket (ACK), Martha’s Vineyard (MVY), Providence (PVD), Worcester (ORH) and Hyannis (HYA).
American Airlines and United Airlines also have waivers. These waivers are for some Northeast airports and dates.
The waivers let passengers change their flights. But not every flight in the waiver is canceled.
The flight situation on Sunday, September 27 is still unclear. Delta says it will cancel many flights at Boston Logan. Airlines are still changing their schedules because the weather is changing too.
Unit 1. Storm News Now
Practice note: Grammar examples and role-play details may be hypothetical. Questions explicitly about the article use the reported facts. This is a historical report, not current travel advice.
Words from the text: hit, strong, heavy, update a schedule, change a plan, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A Use Present Simple for facts. A fact is true now, in general, or many times. We use Present Simple for numbers and general information about flights, airports and weather.
Boston Logan airport has many flight cancelations.
A waiver lets passengers change flights without a change fee.
The storm has strong winds and heavy rain.
There are many flight delays this week.
Present Simple используем для фактов, общей информации и чисел — то, что верно вообще, а не только в этот момент.
B Use Present Continuous (am/is/are + -ing) for an action happening now, at this moment.
A strong storm is hitting the northeast of the U.S.
Airlines are changing their plans because of the storm.
Delta is updating its schedule right now.
Passengers are waiting at the airport now.
Present Continuous используем для действия, которое происходит сейчас, в эту минуту.
C Look for time words to choose the right tense. Now, right now, at the moment go with Present Continuous. A fact, a number, or no time word often go with Present Simple.
| Form / word | Example / meaning |
| Present Simple | Present Continuous |
| a fact or a number | an action now |
| every day / always | now / right now / at the moment |
The weather is the reason for the delays.
The storm is hitting Boston right now.
Cancelations happen every storm season.
Слова-сигналы помогают выбрать время: «сейчас» — Continuous, общий факт или число — Simple.

Words from the text: cancel, have a problem, number, information comes from, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A Use Past Simple for actions that finished in the past, for example on Saturday. For most verbs, add -ed.
Cape Air canceled 115 flights on Saturday.

The airport canceled many flights because of the storm.
Past Simple используем для законченных действий в прошлом (например, в субботу). У большинства глаголов добавляем окончание -ed.
B Some verbs are irregular. be → was/were, have → had. Learn these forms.
| Form / word | Example / meaning |
| be | was / were |
| have | had |
| hit | hit |
Boston had many problems on Saturday.
There were 253 cancelations at Logan airport.
The weather was very bad that day.
Некоторые глаголы неправильные: be → was/were, have → had. Их формы нужно запомнить.
C We often use Past Simple with numbers to report facts about a past day.
Nantucket airport had 66 cancelations on Saturday.
The number of delays at Logan was 36.
This information comes from FlightAware and The Boston Globe.
Past Simple часто используется с числами, чтобы сообщить факты о прошедшем дне (например, сколько рейсов отменили).
Exercises
2.1 Put the verb in brackets into Past Simple.

- Write a fact about an airport.
- Write a fact about a flight or cancelation.
- Write a fact about the weather or storm.
Unit 3. Sunday's Forecast
Practice note: Grammar examples and role-play details may be hypothetical. Questions explicitly about the article use the reported facts. This is a historical report, not current travel advice.
Words from the text: still, clear, schedule, forecast, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A We use will + the base form of the verb to talk about the future. The form is the same for every person: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. The short form is 'll. The negative is won't (will not).
| Form / word | Example / meaning |
| I / you / he / she / it / we / they | will go / 'll go |
| negative | won't go |
| question | Will ... go? |
The storm will hit Boston on Sunday.
Delta will cancel many flights at the airport.
There won't be many cancelations on Monday.
Will не меняется по лицам. Используем 'will + глагол' для будущего. Отрицание – won't, вопрос – Will + подлежащее + глагол?
B We use will to make a prediction about the future. We often say this because of the situation now, for example bad weather. This is not a 100% fact, but we think it is true.
Delta says it will cancel many flights at Boston Logan on Sunday.
The storm is still here, so Sunday's forecast is not clear.
Passengers will have problems at the airport tomorrow.
Will используем, чтобы предсказать будущее, опираясь на ситуацию сейчас (например, плохая погода сегодня → завтра отменят рейсы).
C To make the negative, use won't + verb. To make a question, put will before the subject: Will + subject + verb?
Weather won't be clear on Sunday.
Will passengers get a waiver this week?
The schedule won't change today.
Won't = will not. В вопросе will ставим перед подлежащим.
Exercises
3.1 Complete these practice predictions with will/won't and the verb in brackets. Use the negative only where the bracket says not.
Example: The storm ______ (hit) Boston tonight. → will hit
- Delta ________________ (cancel) many flights on Sunday.
- The airport ________________ (be) very busy tomorrow.
- Delta ________________ (change) the schedule soon.
- The weather ________________ (not/be) clear tomorrow.
- Passengers ________________ (get) information about the waiver this week.
- The storm ________________ (delay) many flights.
3.2 Read the fact about today. Write a prediction about tomorrow with will. Use the word in brackets.
Example: The weather is bad today. (cancel) → The airline will cancel many flights tomorrow too.
- Boston Logan has many delays today. (have)
- The schedule is changing today. (change)
- Passengers have problems today. (have)
- The forecast is not clear today. (be)
- Cape Air cancels flights today. (cancel)
3.3 Use this practice forecast to answer with will/won't. These are hypothetical details, not additional facts from the article.
Forecast: The storm will stay near Boston on Sunday. Delta will cancel many flights and help passengers change their plans. The weather will not be clear. Cape Air will cancel some flights. Eligible passengers will not pay a change fee. Airlines will update their schedules.
- Will Delta cancel many flights on Sunday?

- Will the weather be clear on Sunday?
- Will Cape Air cancel some flights too?
- Will eligible passengers pay a change fee?
- Will airlines update their schedules?
Unit 4. Changing Your Ticket
Practice note: Grammar examples and role-play details may be hypothetical. Questions explicitly about the article use the reported facts. This is a historical report, not current travel advice.
Words from the text: extra fee, extra money, pay extra, let, change a flight, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A We use can to talk about permission. It shows that a rule allows something. The form is the same for every person: I can, you can, he/she/it can, we can, they can.
Passengers can change a flight after a cancelation.
You can ask the agent for a new flight.
Passengers with a waiver can fly on a different day.
Can здесь показывает разрешение — что-то официально позволено правилами авиакомпании.
B We use can to say what a rule allows. Without paying a change fee tells us which fee is removed; it does not always mean that every extra cost is removed.
Eligible passengers can change a flight without paying a change fee.
A different fare may cost more. Check the airline's conditions.
Can't pay means unable or not allowed to pay. It does not mean no payment is needed.
Can — разрешение/возможность. «Не нужно платить» — don't have to pay, а не can't pay. Waiver может отменять сбор за изменение, но не любую возможную доплату.
C We use Can I...? to ask for permission politely. Short answers: Yes, you can. / No, you can't.
Can I change my flight? Yes, you can.
Can I fly tomorrow instead? Yes, you can.
Can I use the waiver for this flight? No, you can't.
Can I...? — вежливый вопрос о разрешении. Краткие ответы: Yes, you can. / No, you can't.
Exercises
4.1 Complete these practice situations with can/can't and the verb in brackets. Use can unless the bracket says not.
Example: Eligible passengers ______ (change) their flight. → can change
- Eligible Cape Air passengers ________________ (fly) on a new date through October 2.
- Under this waiver, you ________________ (change) your flight without a change fee.
- Eligible passengers ________________ (avoid) a change fee under the waiver's conditions.
- Agents ________________ (help) you change your flight.
- This waiver covers September 25–27. You ________________ (not/use) it for a ticket dated October 10.
- In this practice situation, the airport is closed. Aircraft ________________ (not/depart) now.
- In this practice situation, all earlier flights are full. The passenger ________________ (not/avoid) the delay.
4.2 Complete the passenger's questions with Can I...?. Use the verb in brackets.
Example: Passenger: ______ (change) my flight today? Agent: Yes, you can. → Can I change my flight today?
- Passenger: ________________ (fly) tomorrow instead? Agent: Yes, you can.
- Passenger: ________________ (get) a new flight for Sunday? Agent: No, sorry. Sunday is full.
- Passenger: ________________ (change) my flight without a change fee? Agent: Yes, you have a waiver.
- Passenger: ________________ (pay) extra money for a better seat? Agent: Yes, you can.
- Passenger: ________________ (use) the waiver for a flight from New York? Agent: Yes, you can.
4.3 Rewrite each sentence with can.
Example: The waiver lets passengers change a flight. → Passengers can change a flight.
- The airline lets Cape Air passengers fly until October 2.
- Delta's waiver lets passengers change a flight to, from, or through Boston.
- JetBlue's waiver lets passengers change a flight without a change fee.
- The airline lets passengers pay extra for a better seat.
- American Airlines lets passengers in the waiver change their plans.
Unit 5. Because of the Storm
Practice note: Grammar examples and role-play details may be hypothetical. Questions explicitly about the article use the reported facts. This is a historical report, not current travel advice.
Words from the text: because, because of, reason, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A We use because to give a reason for something. After because, we use a subject and a verb.
The flight is late because the storm is strong.
Passengers are worried because the weather is bad.
The airport is closed because it brings heavy rain.
После because ставим подлежащее и глагол: because + кто/что + делает что-то.
B We use because of before a noun or noun phrase, not a full clause with a subject and finite verb. An -ing phrase is also possible, but this unit practises nouns.
| Form / word | Example / meaning |
| because + subject + verb | because of + noun phrase |
| because the storm is strong | because of the strong storm |
| because the weather is bad | because of the bad weather |
Airlines are changing their plans because of the storm.
The flight has a delay because of bad weather.
В этом юните после because of используем существительное или именную группу. Для полного придаточного с подлежащим и сказуемым — because.
C Reason is a noun. It means why something happens. We often say: ... is the reason for ... .
The weather is the reason for the delay.
The storm is the reason for many cancelations.
Reason — существительное 'причина'. Часто используется во фразе 'the reason for...'.
Exercises
5.1 Join the two parts with because. Make one sentence.
Example: The airport is closed / the storm is strong → The airport is closed because the storm is strong.
- Delta is helping passengers / the storm is hitting Boston
- The flight has a delay / the weather is bad
- Passengers can change their flight / Cape Air has a waiver

Example: The flight is canceled ______. → The flight is canceled because of the storm.
- Boston airport is closed ________________.
- The flight has a delay ________________.
- Passengers can't fly ________________.
- Airlines are canceling flights ________________.
- The schedule is changing ________________.
5.4 Complete the sentences with your own reason. Use because or because of.

Unit 6. The Most Problems
Practice note: Grammar examples and role-play details may be hypothetical. Questions explicitly about the article use the reported facts. This is a historical report, not current travel advice.
Words from the text: the most, important, small, big, storm, flight, cancelation, delay, airport, passenger, weather, waiver
A We use the most before a noun to say something has the biggest number or amount. It is the superlative form of 'much' and 'many'.
Cape Air has the most cancelations at Logan airport.
The storm changes the weather in Boston every hour.
Passengers at Logan airport have the most delays today.
The most ставим перед существительным, когда хотим сказать «больше всего». Это превосходная степень от much/many.
B Pattern: Subject + has/have + the most + noun. We use this to compare airlines or airports.
Cape Air canceled the most flights on Saturday.
Which airline has the most delays today?
Cape Air and Delta have the most cancelations at Logan airport.
Чтобы сравнить авиакомпании или аэропорты, используем has/have + the most + существительное.
C Big, small and important describe an airport. Their superlative forms are the biggest, the smallest and the most important. In this unit we mainly practise the most + noun, meaning the largest number or amount.
Boston Logan is a big airport.
Nantucket is a small airport, but it is important for Cape Air.
Of these two airlines, Cape Air has the most cancelations.
Различайте the most cancelations («больше всего отмен») и the most important airport («самый важный аэропорт»). Big → biggest; small → smallest.
Exercises
