The Examiner

The Senior Captain

Manchester can’t take you now. If the situation changes, I’ll tell you.

The Colleague

So, if I understand correctly, Manchester can’t take us for now, but you’ll tell us if that changes. Is that correct?

The Senior Captain

Yes, that’s correct.

The Examiner

So / If I understand correctly, + сообщение своими словами. + Is that correct?

So, … / If I understand correctly, …If I understand correctly, Manchester can’t take us for now.
Is that correct? Is that correct?

If I understand correctly — осторожнее: ты показываешь, что проверяешь своё понимание.

1C. Уточнить одну часть: do you mean …?

The Senior Captain

Manchester can’t take you.

The Colleague

Do you mean they can’t take us at all, or only now?

The Examiner

Do you mean they can’t take us…? — а не can’t they take us.

The Examiner

The Colleague

Under what conditions do they have to accept us?

The Senior Captain

If you declare a fuel Mayday, they have to.

The Colleague

So they’ll accept us only if we declare a Mayday?

The Senior Captain

That’s not what I mean. A Mayday is one condition. We still don’t know why they refused.

The Examiner

If you declare a Mayday, they have to accept you.
Don’t plan on Manchester unless you hear from us.
I’ll call you back only when I have an answer.

Unless = if … not: Don’t plan on Manchester unless you hear from us = Don’t plan on Manchester if you don’t hear from us.

2C. Ошибка: if → only if

Это разные сообщения: из if нельзя автоматически получить only if.

If you declare a Mayday, they have to accept you. They’ll accept us only if we declare a Mayday.

The Colleague

So, if I understand correctly, with a fuel Mayday they have to accept us. Is that correct?

The Senior Captain

Yes.

The Examiner

Senior Captain: “They may accept you later.”

Colleague: “So they’ll accept us later?” ✗

Senior Captain: “No, I said they may. I can’t promise anything.”

They may accept you later.возможно, примутThey will accept us.
If you declare a Mayday, they have to accept you. They have to accept us.

The Examiner

The Colleague

What prevents Manchester from accepting us?

The Senior Captain

We don’t know yet. They haven’t given a reason.

The Colleague

What do we need to do to get into Manchester?

The Senior Captain

If you declare a fuel Mayday, they have to accept you.

The Examiner

3B. Правило

What prevents + кто / что + from + -ing? What prevents Manchester from accepting us?
What limits + что? What limits our options now?
Under what conditions + вопрос? Under what conditions do they have to accept us?
What do you need to + глагол? What do we need to do to get into Manchester?

В вопросах What prevents …?, What limits …?

What prevents Manchester from accepting us?

What does prevent Manchester from accepting us?

What do we need to do?

3D. Prevent … from + -ing

What prevents them from accepting us? ✓

What prevents them to accept us? ✗

The Examiner

The Colleague

Just to confirm: are we allowed to make a third approach at Prestwick?

The Senior Captain

No. Not after two windshear go-arounds.

The Colleague

Is that a technical limit or a rule?

The Senior Captain

It’s a rule. Our procedures don’t allow it. Nothing is wrong with the aircraft.

The Examiner

Is that a technical limit or a rule?
Who requires that?
The Colleague

Who requires that?

The Senior Captain

The company. It’s in our procedures.

The Examiner

Who requires that?

4C. Can, be able to, be allowed to, have to

Can Manchester take us later? We don’t know yet.
be able toсможет; есть возможность (в любом времени)Will they be able to take us later?Maybe.
be allowed toразрешеноAre we allowed to make a third approach? No, we aren’t.
have toобязан, долженDo they have to accept us?With a fuel Mayday, yes.

4D. Различие

Can they take us? / Are they allowed to take us?
They don’t have to accept us. / They aren’t allowed to accept us.

Be able to нужен там, где у can нет формы: после will, после to, в Present Perfect.

Will they be able to take us later? ✓

Will they can take us later? ✗

can + кто + глаголCan they take us?
am / is / are + кто + allowed to + глаголAre we allowed to make a third approach?
do / does + кто + have to + глаголDo they have to accept us?
will + кто + be able to + глаголWill they be able to take us later?

The Examiner

The Colleague

Could you call Manchester and find out why they refused us? I need an answer before we start the approach at Edinburgh, because we may need Manchester after a go-around.

The Senior Captain

I’ll try.

The Colleague

And would you be able to check our fuel from Edinburgh to Manchester?

The Senior Captain

Not quickly. That leg isn’t in your flight plan. You’ll have to work it out yourselves.

The Examiner

Could you + действие + что именно?

ДействиеCould you + глагол + объект?Could you call Manchester?
Срокby / before / within + времяbefore we start the approach
ПричинаI need … because …I need an answer because we may need Manchester.
Цельso that + предложениеCould you tell Manchester about us, so that they know our situation?
Would you be able to …? / Is that possible?Would you be able to check our fuel?

5C. Срок: by, before, within

Could you call back by the start of our approach?
beforeдо событияI need an answer before we start the approach.
Could you call back within ten minutes?

5D. Обрати внимание: find out why …

После find out, tell me, know вопрос становится частью предложения.

Could you find out why they refused us? ✓

Could you find out why did they refuse us? ✗

5E. Различие: could you и would you be able to

Could you check our fuel?
Would you be able to check our fuel?
Is that possible?

The Senior Captain

If you declare a fuel Mayday, they have to.

The Colleague

The Colleague

Is it a technical limit or a rule?

The Senior Captain

We don’t know. That’s what I need to find out.

The Colleague

Could you call them and find out why? I need an answer before we start the approach at Edinburgh.

The Senior Captain

I’ll call you back only when I have an answer.

The Colleague

So, if I understand correctly, we won’t hear from you before you have an answer. Is that correct?

The Senior Captain

Correct.
