Agree and disagree

The Examiner

The Junior First Officer

Let’s declare a Mayday now. Then Manchester will have to accept us.

The Colleague

You’re right that with a Mayday they have to accept us. However, under the criteria it isn’t an emergency yet. Based on our current estimate, we expect to land at Edinburgh above our final reserve.

The Examiner

I agree that + предложение, but + возражениеI agree that a Mayday solves the Manchester problem, but it isn’t an emergency yet.
You’re right about + существительное. However, + возражениеYou’re right about Manchester. However, our predicted landing fuel is above the final reserve.
You’re right that + предложение. However, + возражениеYou’re right that with a Mayday they have to accept us. However, it isn’t an emergency yet.

1C. Обрати внимание: but и however

I agree that it helps, but it isn’t an emergency yet.
You’re right. However, it isn’t an emergency yet.

You’re right, however it isn’t an emergency. ✗ —

1D. Обрати внимание: agree

I agree — я согласен. Без be.

I agree that … ✓ — I am agree that … ✗

I agree with you. Agree that + предложение: I agree that it helps.

The Colleague

You’re right that with a Mayday they have to accept us. However, it isn’t an emergency yet, because we expect to land at Edinburgh above our final reserve.

The Examiner

Based on + источник показывает, на чём держится оценка: based on our current estimate — по нашей текущей оценке.

The Examiner

The Junior First Officer

Although the wind at Edinburgh is strong, it’s still our best option?

The Colleague

Yes. Despite the strong wind, Edinburgh is still our best option. While the wind there is stronger than at Prestwick, Glasgow is reporting windshear on final, and Manchester can’t take us.

The Examiner

Although the wind is strong, Edinburgh is still our best option.
While the wind is stronger there, Edinburgh is still our best option.
despiteсуществительное или -ingDespite the strong wind, Edinburgh is still our best option.
in spite ofсуществительное или -ingIn spite of the strong wind, Edinburgh is still our best option.

Although the wind is strong, … ✓

Despite the strong wind, … ✓

Despite taking extra fuel, we still face a difficult choice. ✓

Despite the wind is strong, … ✗

Despite — без of. In spite of — с of.

The Examiner

The Junior First Officer

Glasgow is closer than Edinburgh. Let’s go there.

The Colleague

Although Glasgow is closer, that doesn’t mean it’s a better option. They’re reporting windshear on final.

The Junior First Officer

Maybe the wind at Glasgow is weaker now.

The Colleague

Even if it’s weaker now, that doesn’t show that the windshear has gone. They’re still reporting it.

The Examiner

This / That doesn’t mean that + предложениефакт есть, но вывода из него нетGlasgow is closer, but that doesn’t mean it’s a better option.
This / That doesn’t show that + предложениефакт не доказывает выводаThat doesn’t show that the windshear has gone.

3C. Различие: although и even if

Even if the wind is weaker now, …

Even if — «даже если».

The Examiner

The Colleague

The wind is a more important factor than the distance. A successful approach at Edinburgh keeps us above our final reserve, whereas Manchester after a go-around means landing below it.

The Junior First Officer

But that estimate assumes we land at Edinburgh. It’s true only if one of our approaches works.

The Examiner

4B. Правило

A more important factor is … / … is a more important factor than … The wind is a more important factor than the distance.
Edinburgh keeps us above our final reserve, whereas Manchester means landing below it.
Our estimate is true only if one of our approaches works.
because + предложениеобъясняет ограничениеIt matters because we can’t divert safely after a second go-around.

4C. Whereas и but

At Edinburgh we land above our final reserve, whereas at Manchester we land below it.

4D. Only if: где граница довода

Only if называет это условие.

The Colleague

We expect to land at Edinburgh above our final reserve.

The Junior First Officer

That’s true only if one of our approaches works.

The Examiner

The Examiner

The Colleague

You’re right about the estimate: it depends on landing at Edinburgh. I had thought the landing estimate settled the question, but your point about another go-around matters. We need to compare the options before we start.

The Junior First Officer

And I agree now that it isn’t an emergency yet. Your point about the criteria is fair.

The Examiner

ПризнатьYou’re right about + существительное; I agree nowYou’re right about the estimate. I agree now.
I had thought … / I thought …, but now …I had thought the landing estimate settled the question, but your point about another go-around matters.
Что изменило мнениеyour point about + существительное; the new information shows that …; because …Your point about the criteria is fair.

5C. I thought и I had thought

I thought the estimate settled the question, but now …
I had thought the estimate settled the question, but …

I had thought — форма Past Perfect: had + V3.

The new weather information shows that the wind at Edinburgh is even stronger than at Prestwick.

The Colleague

I had thought Edinburgh was a calmer option, but the new weather information shows that the wind there is even stronger. It’s still our best option, but we need a plan for Manchester.

The Examiner
