Explain the situation

Sorry, did you say they landed with almost no fuel? I’m flying to Edinburgh tomorrow. Lovely thing to overhear.

They all landed safely. But yes, the fuel margin was tiny.

And you said something about a reserve. I thought the whole point of a reserve was not to use it.

It’s meant to give you time when things don’t go to plan. On that flight, about half an hour. It’s not a separate tank nobody’s allowed to touch.

Unfortunately, the fuel doesn’t know which bit of the plan has gone wrong.

So they were allowed to use it?

In an unforeseen situation, yes. But they had to look for a way to land with that reserve intact first.

I’d have thought the spare airport was the way out.

You mean the alternate. It’s an airport you plan to use if you can’t land at your destination. Manchester was theirs.

The one that said no? That’s not much of a backup.

Naming an alternate doesn’t mean you’ve booked a space there.

So whose idea was it to turn them away?

Nobody knows exactly. There’s no recording of the call. The airport blamed a handling problem, but the handling agent later said its policy was to take those flights.

Very helpful. Everyone has a policy. The aircraft still needs somewhere to land.

That’s the part I don’t like. A backup that might not actually be there.

Exactly. The question isn’t just whether the airport’s on the flight plan. It’s whether you can actually get in.

A. В разговоре

You pilots have a word for everything. What’s the plain-English version?

An alternate? An airport you can go to when your original destination isn’t an option. It’s meant to give you a backup.

B. A thing that … / a person who …
Предмет + that / which + пояснение. Человек + who / that + пояснение.
|---|---|
| an airport that … | An alternate is an airport that gives you another landing option. |
| the fuel that … | Final reserve is the fuel that gives you time for unforeseen situations. |
| a person who … | A captain is a pilot who is in command of the flight. |
It’s the airport that turned them away. —
It’s the fuel they kept for the unexpected. —
|---|---|
| the airport (that) they chose | They выполняют действие: that можно опустить. |
| the airport that refused them | That |
the airport they chose ✓
the airport refused them — это уже отдельное предложение: «аэропорт им отказал».
D. Be meant to / be used for
A reserve is meant to give you a margin. —
The alternate was meant to be their backup. —
Am / is / are meant to — о настоящем; was / were meant to — о прошлом. После to — начальная форма: give, be, help.
be used for + существительное / -ing — для чего используют:
Final reserve is used for unforeseen situations.
A flight plan is used for sharing information about a flight.
После for — sharing, после meant to — share.
Manchester was meant to be their backup, but it refused them.
2. «Можно» не значит «обязательно»

A. В разговоре

So once you pick an alternate, you have to go there?

No. You’re allowed to choose another airport. Having one on the plan doesn’t mean you have to use it.

B. Allowed to / have to / don’t have to
|---|---|---|
| разрешено | be allowed to + глагол | They were allowed to use final reserve in an unforeseen situation. |
| запрещено | not be allowed to + глагол | They weren’t allowed to try Prestwick a third time after two windshear go-arounds. |
| необходимо | have to / had to + глагол | They had to look for an option that preserved final reserve first. |
| необязательно | don’t / didn’t have to + глагол | They didn’t have to choose Manchester just because it was on the plan. |
С allowed меняется be: is allowed / are allowed / was allowed / were allowed.
They weren’t allowed to use it.
They didn’t have to use it.
Didn’t have to
They didn’t have to choose Manchester, but they did.
D. That doesn’t mean …
That doesn’t mean (that) + обычное предложение — это ещё не значит, что…
They had an alternate. That doesn’t mean it had agreed to take them.
Being allowed to use the reserve doesn’t mean you can use it whenever you like.
Being allowed — «то, что тебе разрешено».
Naming an airport doesn’t mean booking it.
Having a plan doesn’t mean having a guarantee.
Having Manchester on the plan didn’t mean they had to go there.
3. «А вот этого мы не знаем»

A. В разговоре

Sounds like somebody didn’t understand their own rules.

Could be. We don’t know what was said on that call. To know where it went wrong, we’d need to hear it.

And nobody recorded it. Of course.

B. We don’t know what / why / whether …
|---|---|
| We don’t know what was said. |
| It’s not clear why they refused. | |
| We don’t know whether the message was passed on correctly. | |
Whether / if здесь означает «ли»: we don’t know whether … / we don’t know if ….
|---|---|
| Why did they refuse? | We don’t know why they refused. |
| What did they say? | We don’t know what they said. |
| Was the message clear? | We don’t know whether the message was clear. |
Did исчезает, а смысловой глагол получает прошедшую форму: did they say → they said.
We don’t know why did they refuse. ✗
We don’t know why they refused. ✓
D. We’d need to know …
We’d need to know + what / whether / who …
We’d need to know what the handling agent actually said.
We’d need to know whether the message reached the right person.
We’d = we would.
Nobody knows exactly и we don’t know — разные по охвату фразы: вторая говорит только о наших знаниях.

I think I get it. The reserve is there to help, but you don’t plan to arrive with almost none of it left.

Exactly.

And the alternate is an option, not a reservation.

You’ve got it.

Still doesn’t explain why that option disappeared.

No. That’s the bit we can’t explain. The report calls it a breakdown in communication.

That sounds much tidier than it must have felt in the cockpit.
