Express a considered opinion
|---|---|
| Предположить, что произошло | might / must / can’t have; might have been + -ing |
| Покритиковать решение и назвать альтернативу | should have; could have; if … had …, might have … |
| Оценить правило и предложить изменение | is meant to; applies to; I’d recommend that…; I’d propose + -ing |
| Обосновать позицию, не обещая невозможного | given what they knew; with hindsight; doesn’t make it…; would help, but wouldn’t guarantee… |

I still don’t understand why Manchester said no.

Someone must have looked at a full apron and decided that was enough diversions for one night.

Must have? Were you on the phone?

No. But they’d already taken nineteen diversions.

Which could mean they knew how to handle them. Or that they were filling up. Pick whichever story you like.

Maybe they were just dealing with too many things at once.

They might have been. It could have been a message that went through the wrong people.

Could have. That I’ll accept.

I’d still have wanted that refusal checked. You’ve planned for Manchester, the forecast there looks better, and suddenly it’s ‘no’ with no explanation.

Do we know they didn’t ask?

The report doesn’t say. But Newcastle wasn’t even considered. They should at least have looked at it.

Ah, Newcastle. Everybody finds it once the report comes out.

It was closer, and the wind was lighter. That isn’t nothing.

No. It deserved a look. I just don’t like turning ‘there was another option’ into ‘the crew were idiots’.

And what about a backup airport that isn’t actually expecting you?

Now that’s the real problem. What’s the point of a backup that only exists on paper?

The plan makes you think about where else you can go. It doesn’t book a stand.

Then I’d recommend that the airport make it clear who can say yes or no. Not send the answer through three people who think somebody else decides.

Manchester has clarified that since the incident. Airfield Control makes the decision now.

After the event. Always a popular time to discover who’s in charge. The system’s much better at writing rules for pilots than for airports.

That’s a bit harsh.

Maybe. It’s still my view.

Would that have stopped this happening?

It might have helped. I’m not going to sell you a rule that makes people incapable of getting things wrong.

A. В разговоре

The message might have got mixed up.

Possibly. That’s a different claim from ‘someone must have refused without checking’.

B. Modal + have + V3
|---|---|---|
| may / might / could have + V3 | возможно, так и было | It could have been a misunderstanding. |
| must have + V3 | наверняка было | The other crew must have had a difficult approach: they lost 25 knots on short final. |
| can’t have + V3 | не может быть, чтобы было | It can’t have been an easy night: three go-arounds in a row. |
В речи could have / should have / would have часто сокращаются до could’ve / should’ve / would’ve. На письме — have, не of.
Might / may / must have been + -ing —
They might have been handling several diversions at once.
They might have missed the request. —
They might have been dealing with another request. —
How do you know?
That doesn’t follow. —
It could just as easily mean… —
It’s a guess, not something the report established. —
According to the report… As far as I can tell…

A. В разговоре

They should have considered Newcastle.

Agreed. Considering it and landing there aren’t the same thing, though.

No. But it might have given them another way out.

B. Should have / shouldn’t have
They should have compared more options.
They shouldn’t have relied so heavily on the original plan.
C. Could have: два разных смысла
|---|---|
| The message could have gone to the wrong person. |
| They could have declared a Mayday before Edinburgh, but didn’t. |
They could have asked why
For all we know, they did ask. —
If + had + V3 → might / could / would have + V3.
If someone had checked the refusal again, they might have found another answer.
Might have — возможный результат. Would probably have оставляет оговорку «вероятно».
If Manchester had accepted them first time, we might not be discussing this now.
Условие — had accepted в прошлом; результат сейчас — might + глагол, здесь might be discussing. Для результата тогда: might have avoided an emergency.

A. В разговоре

Why not make every alternate promise in advance that it’ll take you?

That would be difficult to implement in a storm. A space that’s free now might not be free three hours later.

Then stop treating a name on a plan as if it’s a promise.

|---|---|---|
| назначение | the purpose is to… / is meant to… | The alternate rule is meant to make you carry fuel for somewhere else. |
| область действия | applies to… when… | Final reserve rules apply to every flight, whatever the weather. |
| оценку | effective for… / difficult to implement | A clear trigger would be effective for catching problems early. |
После effective for — существительное или -ing: effective for catching, не for catch.
C. I’d recommend that…
I’d recommend that + кто + начальная форма глагола — я бы рекомендовал, чтобы…
I’d recommend that the airport publish a clear acceptance policy.
I’d recommend that the decision be made by someone with the full picture.
В этой модели publish, не publishes; be made, не is made. Возможен и вариант с should:
I’d recommend that the airport should publish a clear policy.
D. I’d propose + существительное / -ing
I’d propose a clearer trigger. —
I’d propose reviewing the criteria. —
That would help crews decide earlier.
It could make the process clearer.
The policy requires… / The policy allows…

A. В разговоре

Given what they knew at the time, Edinburgh wasn’t a ridiculous choice.

I didn’t say it was. I’m saying they should have kept more options in mind.

Fine. Criticise the choice. Don’t pretend you had their workload.

Given what they knew at the time, …
With hindsight, … —
Easy to say from a bar stool. —
Given + существительное / what + предложение — «с учётом»:
Given the weather, I understand the concern.
Given what they were dealing with, I’m not surprised they focused on one airport.
Just because + предложение + doesn’t mean + предложение — одно ещё не означает другое:
Just because the forecast was better doesn’t mean Manchester was the right call.
Just because it was close doesn’t make it the crew’s fault.
Make it + существительное / прилагательное здесь означает «делать это чем-то»: make it a mistake / make it wrong / make it their fault.
Clearer rules would help, but they wouldn’t guarantee a better outcome.
It might make a difference. That’s not the same as solving the whole problem.
Would help / wouldn’t guarantee Might make a difference — «возможно, что-то изменило бы», не обещание результата.
