PILOT’S TALK

Agree and disagree

Someone You Just Met

I’ll admit it. When I saw the headline, I thought: cheap ticket, not enough fuel.

The Colleague

Not this time. They took over thirteen hundred kilos extra. It was the landing-mass limit at Prestwick that stopped them taking more, not the ticket price.

Someone You Just Met

Fair enough. But I’ve seen 363 kilos and 240. Is one of those a typo?

The Colleague

Different moments. 363 on landing, 240 after they shut down at the stand. Both figures are in the report.

Someone You Just Met

Still not much of a margin, is it?

The Senior Captain

No argument there.

The Colleague

And I’d still have wanted Manchester’s refusal checked. No reason given, just ‘we can’t take you’.

The Senior Captain

The airport gets it wrong, and somehow the pilots end up getting the lecture. Wonderful.

The Colleague

I accept that the airport failed first. I’m not saying the crew caused that. I’m saying a refusal without a reason is worth questioning.

The Senior Captain

Your favourite subject again. Do we know they didn’t question it?

The Colleague

Fair point. The report doesn’t say. Let me put it differently: I don’t know what they asked, but I’d have wanted a clearer answer.

The Senior Captain

And if the answer was still no?

The Colleague

Then I’d have looked elsewhere. I’m not claiming a second call would have fixed everything.

The Senior Captain

Admittedly, I’d have been furious too. But furious isn’t a procedure.

The Colleague

Even allowing for the workload, asking for a recheck seems reasonable to me.

Someone You Just Met

Hang on. You agree the airport got it wrong. You’re arguing about what the crew could have done next, not about the airport. Have I got that right?

The Senior Captain

Yes. And I’m not saying they did everything perfectly.

The Colleague

Nor am I saying they’re to blame.

Someone You Just Met

Good. Because you’ve spent quite a while disagreeing with things neither of you said.

1. «Поправлю одну деталь»

The Examiner

A. В разговоре

Someone You Just Met

Two different fuel figures? Sounds like somebody got it wrong.

The Colleague

Not necessarily. The lower figure refers to the fuel after shutdown. It doesn’t change how little they had left on landing.

The Examiner

That’s not quite right…That’s not quite right: they took extra fuel.
That figure refers to…That figure refers to the fuel left at the stand.
If we’re talking about…If we’re talking about touchdown, it’s 363 kilos.
The figures were measured at different points. Both can be right. They were measured at different points.

Refer to + существительное / -ing — относиться к чему-то: refers to the landing / refers to landing with 363 kilos.

C. It was … that … / They did …

It was + выделенная часть + that + остальное предложение:

It was the landing limit that restricted the fuel, not a decision to save money.

They did plan for bad weather.

They did take extra fuel.

They did.

You’re right about the margin. It’s the timing of that figure I’m correcting.

They landed safely тоже не опровергает само по себе It was dangerous: благополучный исход и риск — разные мысли.

2. «С этим согласен. Но вывод остаётся»

The Examiner

A. В разговоре

The Senior Captain

You’re judging them with the whole report in front of you.

The Colleague

I accept that. Even so, the refusal still needed an explanation.

The Examiner

I accept that… — признаю, что…Even so,…
Granted,…
Admittedly,…

Admittedly, we know more than they did. Nevertheless, the decision is worth discussing.

Even so / still отсылают к уже названному возражению.

Granted принимает утверждение. На сомнение Would asking have helped? естественнее Maybe not. Even so,…, а не автоматическое Granted.

C. Even allowing for…

Even allowing for + существительное / -ing — даже с учётом…

Even allowing for the pressure, I’d want the refusal checked.

Even allowing for having only minutes to decide, I think they settled on Manchester too quickly.

После for — the pressure / having only minutes.

3. «Это не то, что я сказал»

The Examiner

A. В разговоре

The Senior Captain

So you think it’s all the captain’s fault?

The Colleague

No. I’m not saying he caused the problem. I’m saying another option deserved a look.

The Examiner

I’m not saying X. I’m saying Y. — Я не утверждаю X. Я говорю Y.

That’s not quite my point. What I mean is…

I agree with that part, not the whole conclusion. —

Nor am I saying they’re to blame. —

После nor в начале фразы — порядок как в вопросе: nor am I / nor did they.

I’m saying (that) they had another option, not (that) it would definitely have worked.

My argument depends on + существительное / -ing — мой довод зависит от…

My argument depends on there being another usable option.

There being…

There was another option. —

My argument depends on there being another option. —

The decisive point is that…

If that’s the case, I’d narrow my claim. —

That changes part of my argument, not all of it.

The Examiner

A. В разговоре

Someone You Just Met

You both want clearer rules. Do you agree on what they should say?

The Senior Captain

No. I want it clear who can accept a diversion.

The Colleague

And I’d want a way to get a refusal checked. I’m not asking for a promise every airport can take everyone.

Someone You Just Met

So you agree on reviewing the process, not on one particular fix.

The Colleague

That’s fair.

The Examiner

Let me see if I’ve got this.
You think…, whereas you think… / One view is…, whereas the other is…
You both agree that… / We agreed on…
сохраняем условие…only if… / …as long as…
What’s still unresolved is whether…
Is that fair? / Have I got that right?

We agree on a review, subject to keeping the requirements practical.

C. Agree with / on / that

agree with + человек / мнениеI agree with you about the airport.
agree on + предмет / -ingWe agree on reviewing the process.
agree that + предложениеWe agree that the refusal was wrong.

Agreeing on a review не значит agreeing on every change. И Your summary is fair не значит I agree with the other person.

D. Поправить итог

Almost. I’m not saying…, only that…

Not quite. We agreed on X, not on Y.

That captures the disagreement, but not the condition. —

What’s still unresolved is whether Newcastle was a real option.
